MRCEM Primary · the plan

How to pass the Primary (MRCEM Primary exam)

Three habits, one bank, about six months.

1The bank

0

questions. Every one with a full explanation.

Filed by topic and subtopic, with the Important ones marked.

2The routine

20 a day

3,748 ÷ 20 = 188 days. That is about six months, the length of one plan. Every square is a day; the orange one is exam day.

Missed a day? Do 40 tomorrow. Questions you get wrong come back in revision until they stick.

3The secret

Read every explanation. Especially the highlights.

After each answer the explanation opens with the line that answers it highlighted. The other highlighted lines are what other questions on this topic ask. Read those too, and you have covered the questions before you meet them.

Explanation · Brachial plexus

The brachial plexus is formed from the anterior rami of C5 to T1. The musculocutaneous nerve supplies coracobrachialis, biceps and brachialis. The axillary nerve leaves the axilla through the quadrangular space with the posterior circumflex humeral artery.

The MRCEM Primary plan in words

The MRCEM Primary is one paper of 180 single-best-answer questions in 3 hours. RCEM's blueprint gives anatomy 60 questions, physiology 60, pharmacology 24, microbiology 17, evidence-based medicine 10 and pathology 9, so anatomy and physiology are two-thirds of the marks. See the blueprint and pass mark.

1. Do 20 questions a day. MRCEMStat has 3,748 questions. At 20 a day you finish the whole bank in about 188 days, a little over 6 months. Twenty a day is small enough to fit around shifts.

2. Read every explanation. Read it even when you got the question right. Each explanation teaches the whole subtopic, not just one fact.

3. Learn the highlights. The highlighted lines are the answer and the other facts that exam questions ask about the same subtopic. Learning them is how one question prepares you for the next five.

4. Go back to what you missed. Questions you get wrong come back the same day, and you rate the ones you get right Hard, Medium or Easy, so each comes back just before you would forget it. How spaced repetition works.

5. Finish with the mocks. In the last weeks, sit the 3 full mock exams. Each is split into Paper I and Paper II, together about 180 questions in 3 hours, like the real exam. The debrief shows which topics to fix.

Do this and you will not need another textbook. Exam dates and fees change every sitting, so check the RCEM exam calendar.
